23rd July: Lisbon-Oostende

Meeting point at 11h30 am at the Lisbon airport. We took the plane to Brussels, with a stop at Madrid where we met some French scouts. Already in Brussels, we took the train to Oostende. We arrived at 10pm and it was pouring rain! Luke and our friend ‘Popeye’ picked us up by car and took us to the place where the boats were berthed. Two big flooded tents were expecting us, along with many foreigners. After we left everything at the boat (Boogie) and dressed our sailing gear and flip-flops we went to have dinner – veggies, meat on a spit and beef (it seemed like we were eating inside a stream but it tasted great). We had fun taking photographs (that were soon to be lost…) not only at the state of the tent but at ourselves in this unique situation! Our skipper divided us by cabins; we tidied everything up and went to sleep.

Enquanto a festa decorria, o skipper preparava secretamente a táctica a bordo do Boogie .

24th July: Oostende

After breakfast, we took a bus to the Atlantic Wall, a museum site through which we walked for about 1h30min listening to explanations given by a mega telephone (that seemed like a gigantic remote control) about the Second World War, weapons and the life of the soldiers at the scene. We then had a second museum to see, but we decided to stay at the bar talking. It was here that we met our German friend that accompanied us, in one way or another, throughout the Armada.
We went back to the dock, now less flooded, where we had sandwiches, waffles and lemon juice.
In the afternoon we had a great warm bath inside some bags that on the outside looked funny but that, in the end, turned out to be great. The beach games were cancelled due to the bad weather. The boys from the 1100 (Zé, Rui and Filipe) went to town to buy groceries (crackers, olive oil and other ingredients) and the rest of the crew chilled inside the boat playing cards and resting. We already had the food organized but almost nothing inspired us any appetite…
We had stewed meat and pasta for dinner and after putting away the second box of food for the journey, we returned to the tent were the bar was. The crew had a great time given by Big Boy Franky, the entertainer, but, and leaving modesty behind, we made all the fun happen! Scout songs, dances and riddles were shared and experienced by all, especially with the Norwegians. What we didn’t know was that this would be the last time we would see them. While the party was on, our skipper was secretly preparing, on board of Boogie, the sailing tactics for a successful journey.

Dia 25 de Julho: Oostend-Ramsgate

Vento 30/35 Knots SW
Ondulaçâo 2,5 metros
70 Milhas náuticas
Aguaceiros

25th July: Oostende-Ramsgate

Wind 30/35 Knots SW
Undulation 2,5 meters
70 nautical miles
Showers
After waking up at 6h30 am and leaving the dock at 8am, we through ourselves at sea and crossed the English Channel. Many members of the crew took the anti-sickness pills offered by the organization, but not all were lucky enough to use their supposed efficacy! But such didn’t ruin the entire journey, only the first 5 hours.
Right after we left Oostende the other boats, who were supposed to be sailing in a group, began to disperse. It wasn’t long until we were all alone, crossing one of the most dangerous channels of the world! We followed, at risk, the way given to us by the organization and ended up being the first to arrive at Ramsgate, to our surprise!
When we were almost arriving we were surprised by a dog inside the water! Distressed, the dog drowned right in front of our eyes…
It was around 9pm when we arrived and berthed the boat and after washing it and filing the water tanks we took a warm bath and had dinner – soup, meat balls and noodles. It didn’t taste that bad after such a tough day!

26th July: Ramsgate

First day in Ramsgate. We woke up at 8h30 am and went, in our uniforms, to a reception ceremony at the Sailor’s Church at the dock. The ceremony in itself was quick and then a photo shoot session took place, by a journalist. Our crew stood out because of the uniform, especially the socks and the garters (we are one of the few countries that use a complete uniform). Around 11am there was a skippers meeting were we learned that many boats didn’t make it through the channel. It was time to decide whether to continue or not and, due to the strong wind, some crews decided to stay at Ramsgate. We decided to go on.
We had a free morning and so we strolled around Ramsgate. It was time to get Pounds, find decent water, buy a rain coat for 80£ and get dirty from pigeon faeces!! It was a calm morning until Xica’s photograph machine card was formatted… She went back to town to try to recover some of the lost pictures but, after this incident, a lot changed on board!
We were told that some crews turned around while crossing the channel and that they wouldn’t be arriving at Ramsgate. For this reason and for the fact that we were under seriously strong winds, we postponed our leaving from Ramsgate for 2am of the 27th July.

Dia 27 de Julho: Ramsgate-Londres

Vento 20/25 Knots SW
Ondulação 1 metro
72 Milhas Náuticas

Acordámos às 00h30. O vento tinha acalmado e partimos à hora prevista (02h00).

27th July: Ramsgate-London

Wind 20/25 Knots SW
Undulation 1 meter
72 nautical miles

Our crew woke up at 00h30 am. The wind was calm and so we took off at the established time (02am). After the toughness of the previous stage, all boats decided to stay together but, throughout the night, all started to disperse and, once again, half way through the Princess Channel, we were alone. The Thames was approaching and all the information and nautical charts we had ended here. Once again, we were alone! We still had 30 miles inside the river until we reached London. After several hours of navigation by instinct inside the Thames, we were able to reach Deo Juvante, with whom we were, once again, the first to reach London.
Some slept through most of the journey and others got to see the sun rise and just rested their eyes. We had breakfast on board and arrived at the East Indian Dock, where the Dockland Scout Project is, at around 02h30pm.
We took a shower, washed and tidied the boat. Soup, toasts with cheese and cold meats served as our lunch. The crew decided to rest for a few hours and then woke up to go for a walk around. We tried to find a place to eat something but we were in the middle of no where! So we decided to go back to the boat where our cook (Xica) made us and omelette with cheese and toasts.

Fizemos amigos e ficamos a conhecer as outras tripulações!

28th July: London

Free day in London! Our crew divided itself by interest groups: the boys from 1100 went to Oxford Street, Filipa and Manel went to the History Natural Museum and the others (Xica, Kica and Tiago) walked around through several places. The first group ate a stake for lunch (Rui met up with a friend who lives in London) and the rest were content with Burger King.
At the end of the day, we received a message saying that there was a possibility for us to go and visit the Jamboree. We were all very excited and flew to the boat to get our uniform on. A barbecue followed where we had sausages, chicken and salads and, since it started to rain, we all went inside the Dockland Scout Project’s ship. It is huge and it is used for workshops, national and international activities. Our crew then received a second message, now saying that our trip to the Jamboree was cancelled… We were all very sad, but enjoyed the rest of the evening partying with the other members of the Armada. We made friends and got to know the other crews!
Slowly, everyone went back to their boats to rest. There was a new journey the next day.

Dia 29 de Julho: Londres-Ramsgate

Vento 15 Knots SW
Ondulação 1 metro
Lua Cheia
75 Milhas Náuticas
Aguaceiros

29th July: London-Ramsgate

Wind 15 Knots SW
Undulation 1 meter
75 Nautical Miles
Showers

After the morning routine, we had a photo shoot. Each crew then went back to their boats to prepare to leave the dock. We left at 02h30pm (we couldn’t leave earlier due to an air show promoted by Red Bull). The Armada left as a group. During the time we were going down the River Thames all the boats remained as a group, dancing through the water using the wind and the tide in their favour. As we were leaving Thames behind, two boats took the lead: Boogie and our guardian angel, Deo Juvante, the biggest sailing vessel of the fleet, with which we had constant communications via radio. This trip was very fun: we saw the sunset, the rise of the full moon, we listened to music and we even cooked on board (toasts with cheese!). No one got sick and we arrived at Ramsgate as 02h30am. Some members of the crew went for a hot shower. It was awkward to go to sleep with the sunrise (approximately at 04am).

Dia 30 de Julho: Ramsgate - Zeebrugge

Vento 10 Knots SW

30th July: Ramsgate-Zeebrugge

Wind 10 Knots SW
Undulation 1 meter
90 Nautical Miles

Xica and Kica woke up early and went to buy a real breakfast (for a change!): juices, tasty and crispy bread.
Our skipper was beginning to accuse extreme exhaustion but we only had one last stage to complete. Many boats left early in the morning and, once again, the fleet was separated. Right after a few hours of navigation we were alone, but the sea was calm and the wind weak. The journey was calm until we reached the port of Zeebrugge, the biggest Commercial port of Belgium. Once again, we were one of the first to arrive but the tiredness and the lack of knowledge of the port, plus the fact that it was night, made us wait for the closest boat, Capoeira (a sailing vessel with 50 feet that carried the members of the organization, who always gave us the solicited support).

31st July: Zeebrugge

Our crew woke up and used the boats’ hose to take a shower! Some of our neighbours followed our idea. There was a fun environment. Some took a swim in the dirty waters of the marina and others just fooled around.
Cleaning up followed: all the food was returned to the organization (almost all of it went to children’s homes or other scouting activities) and boats returned to the marina.
We then went to lunch (some to a restaurant and others to the supermarket).
At 05h30pm we had a ceremony where our crew lowered the Portuguese flag at the sound of our National Anthem. The Armada was over and so we all had a big moment of sharing: photographs, insignia, scarfs and contact exchanges. Lots of kissing and hugging and ‘see you soon’ farewell’s.
Our crew went to Brussels by train where we met with Kristen, a sea scout that kindly lended us their base so we could spend the following two nights. She even went to get us dinner (Quick – the Belgium version of Mac Donalds!).

1st August: Brussels

On this day, all the scouts from all over the world renewed their promise at 08am, London time. For this reason, we got up and renewed our own: we said the promise ceremonial and said the scout prayer. It was a symbolic moment.
We then went to the centre of Brussels where we had breakfast: croissants and cakes.
We spent the day walking around the Grand Place and surrounding areas. It was a calm and tourist like day! We had lunch at panos (Belgium version of Pans and Company) at the sound of street musicians. We walked around again in the afternoon and waited until it was time for dinner, at Pizza Hut! It was a nice dinner with speeches and all. During dinner, the boys from 1100 talked with the Belgium girls and went to meet them at Gant after dinner, for a night out. The rest of the crew went back to rest and stayed up talking until late in the morning.

Chegamos a Lisboa à hora prevista.

Boogie Crew

2nd August: Brussels-Lisbon

The 1100 boys arrived as 07am from their night out and so all the crew rested until late in the morning. Little by little everyone woke up, had a shower, packed their bags and cleaned the place. We left the base at 12h30pm and went to the Central Station, where we left our bags in the lockers. We then went to the Grand Place to meet Kristen with whom we had lunch at Mac Donalds. After saying goodbye and thank you we went to the airport, where we waited 1h30min for the plane!
We made a stop at Madrid (some members of the crew where about to stay behind: the people from the boarding balcony where stressing). Our crew arrived in Lisbon in time, took some pictures and said goodbye – the next day we would see each other at dinner time.

Boogie Crew

O nosso Skipper quis deixar claro:

O Skipper, Tiago Brarens

Our Skipper would like to say:

“From the 32 initial boats for the crossing of the English Channel, only 8 completed the expected course, the adverse meteorological conditions could have cancelled the Armada.
From the 4 stages that took place in Belgian, French and English international waters, only one boat always arrived in first place, Boogie, one of the smallest sailing vessels with 35 feet and 8 Portuguese crew members always with the Portuguese National flag at the top of the mast.
We honoured 5 centuries of sea tradition, and left behind 31 vessels form several nationalities.
The Skipper, Tiago Brarens”

Obrigado atodos...over and out."
Rui

Amigos a sério! Espero poder vir a navegar comvocês noutro mar agitado, noutros põres-do-sol e noutros nasceres-do-sol, eclaro, noutras "stary, stary night".
